Henry was born in Bartow, FL and received a
degree in music education from the University of South Florida
in Tampa. He
moved to New Port Richey in 1972, where he became director
of music at Mittye P. Locke Elementary School, where he taught
for 27 years. Henry is also the music director at the First
United Methodist Church of New Port Richey, and in addition
to directing the youth and adult choirs, also plays keyboard
and arranges the music for the Praise Team. He also formed,
directed and wrote all the music for a semi-professional Silver
Cornet Band that has performed all around the area. Henry played
lead trumpet in the pit orchestra at the Richey Suncoast Theater
for more than fifteen years, and when time permitted, played
at the Performing Arts Center in Tampa and the Bayfront Center
in St. Petersburg for the original Broadway casts of “West
Side Story” and “Forty-Second Street”, just
to name a few.
He was
named the Jaycee’s outstanding educator of the
year in 1980, and the USF Alumni’s educator of the year
in 1982. He was also named Teacher of the Year at Locke Elementary
in 1992, and was given he key to the city of New Port Richey
by the mayor for outstanding community service in 1993. He
also directs and arranges music for an all-men’s chorus, “The
Jubilee Singers”, and “The Choraliers”, a
very active chorus located in Timber Oaks in Port Richey.
To this day, Henry is still very much active in his directing
and arranging the various groups mentioned above. Since 1972
Henry has directed the Richey Concert Band, which is now 87
members strong.
